The Aboriginal Diocesan Pastoral Council (ADPC) 2024, held from June 25-28 at Nungalinya College in Darwin, marked a significant gathering for the Catholic Church in the Northern Territory. This event brought together 43 church leaders, including 31 Aboriginal leaders from 12 diverse communities, to discuss their faith, culture, and the future of their ministry.
The attendees, representing communities such as Wurrumiyanga, Garden Point, Snake Bay, Wadeye, Palumpa, Daly River, Belyuen, Batchelor, St Martin De Porres Community in Darwin, Alice Springs, Ltyentye Apurte, and Harts Range, engaged in three days of meaningful dialogue. They shared successes and challenges, and committed to steps for moving forward.
Key topics included the formation of Aboriginal lay leaders, the establishment of parish councils or leadership teams, and the involvement of youth and men in the church. With six of the 12 communities lacking a permanent priest or weekly Mass, the need for intentional leadership formation was emphasised.
Highlights of the Council included updates from Nungalinya College, where 78 Catholic adults have participated in formation classes this year, and discussions on safeguarding and national Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander Catholic Church initiatives.
Bishop Charles’ message resonated with attendees, as he called for wisdom and guidance in discerning God’s plan for their ministry. Fr. Dan Benedetti MGL praised the increased responsibilities taken by Aboriginal leaders and their collective efforts to support one another, guided by the Holy Spirit.
Evenings at the Council were filled with spiritual activities, including rosary nights, a screening of “The Chosen,” and a healing night featuring Adoration, testimonies, Reconciliation, and Aboriginal-led prayer teams. Morning prayers and Masses, led by various communities, fostered a sense of unity and spiritual growth.
The ADPC 2024 was a powerful testament to the strength and resilience of the Aboriginal Catholic community, as they continue to grow together in faith and address the challenges ahead.
