Celebrating 75 Years of Service: Vinnies NT’s Legacy of Compassion and Community
As St Vincent de Paul Society, affectionately known as Vinnies, marks its 75th anniversary in the Territory, it stands as a testament to enduring compassion, community spirit, and faith in action. Since 1949, Vinnies NT has provided essential support to thousands of Territorians, including the vulnerable and marginalised, offering food, shelter, and hope to those in need.
Founded by Frédéric Ozanam in the spirit of St Vincent de Paul’s mission of charity, the Society’s reach extends across Australia, with a particularly significant presence in the Northern Territory. Over the decades, Vinnies has become an indispensable source of relief for individuals facing hardship, from assisting with the basics of life to responding to crises with innovative and sustainable solutions.
Bishop Charles Gauci, in a heartfelt message to mark the milestone, reflected on the immense contributions of Vinnies in the diocese. “What a great achievement!” Bishop Gauci remarked. “For 75 years, this incredible organisation has been a beacon of hope, offering practical help to those in need. The work they do—from providing food and shelter to creatively finding new ways to serve more people—is truly the work of Christ.”
The Bishop also encouraged members of the community to continue supporting Vinnies through prayer, donations, and volunteering, noting how crucial volunteers are to the Society’s ongoing success. “Some of you may consider joining Vinnies to fulfil Christ’s call to love and care for our neighbours. It’s an extraordinary way to grow spiritually while making a real difference in people’s lives.”
To celebrate this significant anniversary, a special Mass is being held on 27th September 2024 at 5:30 pm at St Mary’s Cathedral, with all members of the community warmly joining in the celebrations and giving thanks for 75 years of transformative service.
For three-quarters of a century, Vinnies NT has embodied the mission of building a more just and compassionate society. As it looks toward the future, the Society continues to inspire Territorians with its steadfast commitment to helping those in need, ensuring that hope remains alive in even the most difficult circumstances.
