Commemorative Mass for Cyclone Tracy: Honouring Resilience and Unity 50 Years On

Darwin will pause to remember and reflect on one of the most defining moments in its history, as the community gathers for a Commemorative Mass marking the 50th anniversary of Cyclone Tracy. Held at St Mary’s Star of the Sea Cathedral on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at 11:30 AM, this solemn event will honour those affected by the devastation and celebrate the resilience that has defined the city ever since.

Cyclone Tracy struck Darwin on Christmas Eve in 1974, claiming 71 lives and leaving tens of thousands homeless. It forever changed the fabric of the Territory, yet also showcased the extraordinary strength and unity of its people. The Mass, led by Bishop Charles Gauci, will be a time for prayer, remembrance, and gratitude for the courage that rebuilt a city.

Following the service, attendees are invited to stay for refreshments, providing an opportunity to connect, share stories, and reflect on the lessons of the past. “This milestone is not just a time to mourn but also to celebrate the resilience and spirit that define Darwin,” Bishop Gauci said.

All are welcome to join this special commemoration as the community comes together in faith, remembrance, and unity.
