In today’s gospel (Luke 24: 13-25) from the reading for mass we have the account of Jesus meeting the two disciples on the way to Emmaus.
This was the evening of Easter Day, the day of the resurrection.
They are on the way back to Emmaus from Jerusalem. They are absolutely devastated. Jesus had been murdered, their hopes about him dashed!
The tomb was now empty and some of the women had seen a vision declaring that he was alive, they do not know what to make of all this!

Jesus meets them along the road and asks them to tell him what had happened.
They do and then Jesus starts explaining the scriptures to them.
He touched the depths of their hearts and their hearts started burning within them.

Up till now they had not recognised Jesus. As they arrive at their destination, they invite him in. As they are at table Jesus took the bread broke it and said the blessing.

Then they recognise him, and he vanishes from their sight.
They are absolutely energised and rush back several kilometres back to Jerusalem to tell the others!

This account of the appearance of The Risen Jesus is a replica of what happens at mass!
We come as we are, listen to the scriptures, have them explained, receive the Eucharist, and go forth to tell others about our experience!
We continue to meet the risen Christ in so many ways…
