Bernadette Soubirous (1844-1879) was the person that our Lady appeared to at Lourdes and her feast is today.
She came from a very poor family and had received a very poor education.
Our Lady, Mary the mother of Jesus appeared to her and introduced herself to her as The Immaculate Conception.
This happened shortly after Pope Pius the Ninth had made the declaration, of what the church had believed, that God had protected Mary with his grace from sin from the moment of her conception.
Bernadette would probably have had no way of knowing what that would have meant.
When she reported her experiences and visions it was initially treated with much scepticism.
Eventually it was accepted as authentic, and the place became the great shrine for international pilgrimages that it is today.
Bernadette became a nun where she lived a life of humility.
Throughout her life she suffered from asthma and she died young.
She never let the fame that she experienced get to her head. She retained her simplicity and humility till the end.
She is great reminder to us that for Christians there is no place for false pride.
We are of course gifted and loved.
However, in the end is grace and without God we can do nothing!
