I had Q&A with some year 5 students, in one of our schools this week.

They asked me questions and I tried to answer them.

So many of the questions were around COVID-19.

Why has it happened?

Why does God allow it?

Is it a punishment?

Is it the end of the world?

Has this been planned by God?

And other questions…

This is obviously very important to these young primary school children.

No, I said, God did not send COVID.

Nature has viruses affecting humans animals and flora…

Nature, great and amazing as it is, nonetheless is limited and has limitations.

God does not normally interfere with nature and the various evolutionary processes. In some situations, God seems to intervene, however, it is not the norm.

No, it is not a punishment and it is not the end of the world, etc, etc.

I was surprised to what extent this situation is such a matter of concern for our people. It is however understandable. They are hearing all about it in many aspects of social media and from each other and from others.

It is obvious that in our busy world we need to make time to listen to children and young people and discuss their concerns with them.

If we do not make ourselves available, they will either remain anxious and internalise their concerns or find answers from inappropriate sources.

Jesus praised those who teach good things to children. He also spoke harshly to those who harmed them.
