Today is the feast of the dedication of the Basilica of St Mary Major.
While the Basilica is itself very beautiful and very historical it also has great symbolism.
It was built shortly after the council of Ephesus which took place in 431.
This council proclaimed Mary as the mother of God.
This was to emphasise that Jesus was Truly God as well as truly Human.
Of course, Mary is herself only human.
The incarnation of the Son of God took place in the womb of Mary when she agreed to be the mother of Jesus when invited to do so by God.
The Hypostatic Union is the term used when we refer to Jesus being Truly God as well as being truly human, being one individual existence.
Mainstream Christianity has always held on to this belief. It is an amazing mystery.
It is also a wonderful gift for us.
This amazing God of the Universe beyond comprehension becomes truly one of us so that we can identify with him and become truly one with God in Faith and Love.
God relates with us humans knowing full well our limitations and weakness. We are also wonderfully made in the image of God.
Frail but amazing at the same time.
The incarnation is about intimacy and a loving relationship with God who is LOVE.
Over the ages, different heresies have overemphasised one aspect of Christ to the detriment of who He really is.
Being Christian is about being fully human. Jesus is The Way, The Truth, and The Life. He is our role model as well as a brother as well as God.
The Holy Spirit keeps expanding our consciousness as we ponder and live this mystery.
Mary is also the mother of the Church given to us by Jesus. She is both mother and friend.
