The violence in the USA has continued to hit the headlines.
So much anger! It seems to have exploded and exposed so many divisions in the wealthiest and most powerful nation on earth.
How has it come to this?
A wound that is not treated can fester. When we deny reality we live in an unreal world, a false sense of peace.
Past hurts, past wrongs, do not just go away.
The amazing and terrible history of slavery; the gap between rich and poor; an over emphasis on individualism and self-interest; a narrow vision of social reality; a certain lack of experienced empathy and a lack of prudent wise leadership, have provided an explosive cocktail!
The USA has done much good in the world, but shadows within that society are also very real!
We can learn a lot from the mistakes of others.
Any degrading of a part of society degrades those who do the degrading.
Any unbalanced self-reliance combined with an imbalance in self-interest, easily becomes selfishness.
Uninformed ignorance can mean that we keep repeating the same mistakes.
Serious self-reflection is necessary in the pursuit of truth.
Lack of empathy leads to antipathy and lack of engagement, and to distancing from others.
The pursuit of unbridled capitalism leads to injustice.
There can be no world peace unless we have justice for all.
Unbridled pride leads to falsehood and lies.
Compassion for others means that we learn to walk in their shoes.
Turning one group against another leads to demonising the other.
If you think small, you remain small-minded.
There can be no love without forgiveness.
Jesus confronts the full force of evil with self-sacrificing and unconditional love. He taught us that we do not have to be mastered by egotism, selfishness and lies. He taught us that the truth sets us free.
There are many things that we do not know the answers to!
That is why we need to keep coming back to the source of all truth, wisdom and love. We need to acknowledge that we many times do not know the answer to some big questions.
“I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life” have come echoing over the centuries, and still these words are the light in darkness.
