Feast of the dedication of St Mary Major

The Council of Ephesus 431 wanted to emphasise that Jesus was truly God as well as being truly human. The term Theotokos was proclaimed in this council. It means mother of God.Mary was the mother of Jesus and was declared ‘mother of God’, Jesus being truly God, and mother of the church, the church being the mystical body of Christ. The Basilica of Mary Major was built in Rome shortly afterwards to celebrate this event. It was the first church in Western Europe dedicated to Our Lady. There had been various opinions about the nature of who Christ really was.Authentic Christian teaching always held that Jesus was truly human and also truly God. He was truly born of a woman Mary by the power of the Holy Spirit.Pope Francis always goes to pray in this Basilica in Rome before he goes on any of his overseas pastoral visits.Mary always points us to Jesus. In the miracle of Cana in Galilee, Mary told the people there, ‘Do whatever he tells you’.He then changed the water into wine saving the hosts from embarrassment. From the cross, Jesus says to the beloved disciples, ‘This is your mother’…Mary is a role model for Christians. She said yes to Jesus when invited to do so by the archangel Gabriel. She is a fellow member in our church, a mother figure helping us to also always say YES to God like she always did…
