Humble service

In today’s gospel, Jesus reminds us about needing to be liberated from an unhealthy need to be noticed.A child needs reassurance. We need to tell a young person that they are beautiful, attractive, gifted etc. There is nothing wrong, indeed it is a good thing, to tell an adult how gifted you see them as.It is good to affirm each other. However, if I as an adult NEED others to tell me how good I am so that I can be happy, then there is something wrong. We do not need others to tell us that we are important. We do not need to push ourselves forward looking for recognition. We are already infinitely loved. We are created in the image of God.Jesus gives us a great example of service. During the last supper, he washes the feet of the apostles (a task done by servants). He died for us out of love.Christian leadership is about service.Lording it over people is just not Christian. When we help others, we are called to do so with generosity. When we give, we receive, but we do not give so that we can receive. We are given many good things by God…We are called to give without expecting something back…
