Jesus is in the house of Martha and Mary. Martha is busy and fretting. Mary is listening to Jesus.
Martha wants Mary to help her. Jesus says Mary has chosen what is most important. Does it mean that providing food for hungry people is not a good thing? Jesus seemed to have enjoyed food and the company of others. He most probably enjoyed Martha’s food and service on that day. However, the fretting would not have been a good thing. Martha was fretting. Fretting does not change things. It is understandable that we do fret. However, staying trapped in fretting is never very helpful. I am still able to be guided by Jesus and his word in my everyday life. That includes cooking, cleaning, etc. Cooking, cleaning, indeed all work, is a way of making love visible. Having the right intention and reason for doing things helps us not to fret. Indeed, the words of Jesus and the knowledge that he is always with us is life-giving. Listening and pondering on the word of God helps to deal with all the challenges of life…
