“Let the children come to me, do not stop them”

“Let the children come to me, do not stop them”

King Herod had a number of children killed in his attempt to kill Jesus.

These innocent children died because of Jesus.  They have been remembered ever since with great love and respect.

Jesus said “let the children come to me, do not stop them”.

He spoke very strongly to those who hurt children.  He considered it a great evil to hurt children.

We need to do our best to protect children from all forms of abuse anywhere.  This includes family life, our Churches and elsewhere.

Then there is the very sad and disturbing situation of abortion.  From our Christian perspective of respect for the sanctity of human life in all its forms, abortion is very wrong.  We need to do our best to educate all about the value of human life.

Objectively abortion is wrong and attacks the most vulnerable in our human society.  Of course, we need to be very careful about judging individuals.  Jesus told us not to judge.

We need to treat with compassion those who have been involved with abortion.  We need to be as compassionate as God is compassionate.

This does not mean that we agree with abortion.  It does not mean that we stop educating people about the sanctity of life.

Children have a right to grow in safety, surrounded by love, where they can reach their full potential.

Our Churches need to be such places, always improving how this happens.

The actions of King Herod were those of a tyrant.  He would do anything to stay in power, even killing innocent children.

We keep being reminded to what length the ego can go if left unchecked.

Human beings are capable of amazing things, many noble and good things.

However, we are also able to commit huge and horrific crimes.

Jesus calls us to wake up and to embrace our potential for doing good, for loving.
