Not easy but so real!

I was talking recently with a mother. Their daughter suffers from a mental illness.

It is a terrible illness that could easily end up being fatal.

This young woman is much loved by her parents and family. She is beautiful both in stature and in soul. She is intelligent and professionally trained, very capable in her work.

Her parent’s life has come to a standstill.

All their time from work is spent with her.

In many ways, they are keeping her alive. She is often in hospital, increasingly so.

The doctors told her parents that they are keeping her alive by their persistent love and care.

Her mother said to me ‘we will never abandon her!’

Knowing her parents that is exactly what I would expect. It is who they are!

Commitment is not about the easy option. It is about the right option. It is about being true to who we are, to what we believe.

Love is about commitment. Sentiments and feelings are important, but love is much more than them.

I keep being reminded and enriched by people like these two parents. I am reminded of enduring love, and that love is gutsy.

There is a resilience in us that can often surprise us.

When we truly love we can know God.

After all, we are created in the image of God.
