John the Baptist, the only Saint, apart from Mary and Joseph, who has two Feasts. His birth and his martyrdom.
Since he was the son of Elizabeth and Zechariah, John was related to Jesus.
Even in his mother’s womb he rejoiced and reacted to the presence of Jesus in Mary’s womb.
Jesus spoke of him, saying that no-one born of woman was greater than John the Baptist.
John challenged his society to be converted. He called people back to God. He even challenged King Herod because he was living with his brother’s wife.
His big message was “prepare the way for the Lord!”
His mission was to prepare the way for Jesus: “make the way straight”.
John challenges us to be clear about responding to God’s call. He would say “not to beat about the bush!”
We are also like John, invited to prepare the way for Jesus. The way we live our lives helps others to have contact with a Christian way of life.
How I drive my car, with due diligence and respect for others.
How I treat people when I am shopping.
How I greet the stranger.
How I do not cheat in any way.
How I am not dishonest.
How I treat my family.
How I am committed to integrity.
How I am a good listener.
How I do not compromise in living by Christian ethics.
How it is obvious that God is real for me.
John was killed because of his faithfulness to his mission. He was a martyr.
Am I prepared to continue living by Christian values, not just when it is easy, but also when it is challenging and not so easy?
