Abraham is a man of faith. He leaves his homeland and follows God’s call. He trusts that God will give him a son even though his wife Sarah is past childbearing and he himself is old.
Now he does not even let his love for his son Isaac be bigger than his trust in God!
Of course, human sacrifice was abhorrent to God and is condemned in the Old Testament.
We can love God with all our heart and still love fully the people in our life.
However it is only to God that we can say ‘Whatever you want however you want it here I am.
God will never want anything from us that is not for our good. We can trust God fully knowing that there is not any selfishness ever, whatsoever in God!
In the beautiful second reading from Romans, we are reminded that nothing can ever come between us and the love of God. God’s love is unconditional. No sin, nothing will stop God loving us. With God on our side who can be against us!!
In the Gospel Jesus is transfigured.
As the time gets close to his passion and death he is reassured by the father of his faithfulness to him. The three apostles are also reassured. They are reminded that Jesus is their Way, Truth and Life.
We have our highs and lows, our joys and sorrows, our moments of wow and our times of ‘ordinariness ‘, in all this Jesus is still there for us loving and caring!!
