A young man comes to Jesus. His heart has been stirred with a desire to do the right thing.
He is a good living young man, living by the commandments.
Jesus loves him and invited him to let everything go and follow Him.
He does not accept the invitation because he is a wealthy man.
He goes away sad.
Jesus uses this occasion to talk about the obstacle that possessions can be to accepting God’s invitation.
He invites us to be unencumbered by ‘Excess luggage’.
He also says clearly that we cannot save ourselves, in fact, it’s impossible to be saved by ourselves.
Then Jesus tells us that God will never be outdone in generosity.
Last week, on Monday we celebrated the Feast of St Francis of Assisi.
He was a happy man despite being one of the poorest around.
St Francis was a prophet in his time and is still one for our times!
