In a recent episode of the Cathcroc series, Emily Cogill asked a deeply moving question that touches many hearts: “If God loves us so much, why does He let innocent people pass away in things such as car accidents?”
This heartfelt question was first posed to Cathcroc, the beloved mascot known for engaging children and young people in conversations about faith. Cathcroc then turned to Bishop Charles Gauci for a thoughtful and compassionate response.
Bishop Charles began by acknowledging Emily’s question with warmth and honesty:
“Emily, when my sister died at birth, and my brother died when he was only four and a half years old, I was there. I was just 13 at the time and I saw him die. It was very sad for me. But I know that God is looking after them.”
He went on to explain that while tragedies such as car accidents are painful and hard to understand, they are part of the natural order of life:
“If God was to intervene with nature all the time, then nature could not exist. People make mistakes, and that’s why we have accidents. But God has promised that He will look after my sister, my brother, and all the others who die as a result of accidents.”
In offering hope, Bishop Charles emphasised that God’s love is unending:
“The story of Jesus makes this very clear to us. God loves them and will look after them — I believe that very strongly.”
Through his personal testimony, Bishop Charles highlighted the Christian belief that even in the face of suffering and loss, God’s love and care remain constant.
The session closed with an invitation: “If you have any questions about God and the beautiful creations around us, feel free to reach out.”
This exchange between Emily and Bishop Charles serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of asking honest questions about faith, grief, and God’s presence in the hardest moments of life. It also reflects the compassion and hope that are at the heart of the Christian message.
