Faith Amidst the Wreckage: Darwin Man’s Miraculous Escape from Fiery Collision
In a harrowing incident that could have easily ended in tragedy, Rogers Kibazo, from Darwin’s African Catholic community, emerged unscathed from a severe car crash. His story is not just one of survival but of faith and divine intervention.
Last Saturday, October 19, 2024, started like any other for Kibazo. Known affectionately as “Kibz” by many, he felt a peculiar mix of emotions that day—excitement mingled with a sense of sorrow. But rather than dwell on the feeling, he turned to prayer. “I prayed, asking the Lord for protection, not just for myself but for my loved ones,” he recalls. That prayer, it seems, would prove to be his shield later that night.
As an active member of the African Catholic community in Darwin, Kibazo is no stranger to the power of collective faith. The community gathers regularly to recite the Rosary, especially in October, the Month of the Rosary. On that fateful Saturday, Kibazo participated in the group’s prayers as usual before resuming his work as a driver.
What he didn’t know was that his journey after the prayers would become the scene of a life-changing event. Driving along Baggot Road at 2:30 a.m. the following morning, Kibazo was hit by a speeding car. The impact was devastating. “The car swung violently, hit the traffic light pole, and then crashed into a fence. Moments later, the same car hit us again,” he recounts.
With four passengers in his car, fear and panic gripped the vehicle. But not Kibazo. Amid the chaos, he felt an unusual sense of calm. “People were crying, but I felt something protective around me. My heart stayed calm as I held the steering wheel,” he describes, attributing this to the power of his earlier prayers.
The wreckage was severe. Doors were jammed shut, and it took the intervention of emergency services to help Kibazo and his passengers escape through a window. Despite the violent collision, none of them sustained any visible injuries. Shaken but unharmed, they were taken to Darwin Hospital for further examination.
Kibazo’s calmness contrasted sharply with the scene of devastation around him. The driver of the other car, a 21-year-old heavily intoxicated, was arrested on the spot.
Reflecting on his miraculous survival, Kibazo sees the hand of divine intervention at work. “Looking at the car, you wouldn’t believe anyone could have survived that crash. But I did. We all did. I believe it was God’s protection,” he shares. His message to others is simple yet profound: “Always pray, trust in the Lord for protection, and parents, never stop praying for your children.”
Kibazo’s story serves as a powerful reminder of faith’s ability to provide strength in the most terrifying moments of life. For him, this was more than a mere accident—it was a testament to the enduring power of prayer.
