Farewell to Br Vince and the Christian Brothers from Wadeye
This morning, my heart was very much with the people of Wadeye as they gathered to farewell Br Vince Roche cfc and the Christian Brothers after many decades of faithful service.
As I am accompanying our young people at the Australian Catholic Youth Festival, I could not be there and sent my apologies with our Chancellor, Clalia Mar, who represented me.
Today, we give special thanks for the extraordinary life and witness of Br Vince Roche. For decades, Br Vince has been a steadfast, gentle and deeply faithful presence among the people of Wadeye. His life has been one of quiet generosity, deep listening, prayerful service and unwavering commitment to God’s people. His witness speaks powerfully of what it means to live one’s vocation with humility and love.
I gratefully acknowledge the long and faithful service of Br Eamon O’Brien, Br Phil Joyner, Br Bill Tynan, Br Sean McManus and other Brothers, whose lives and ministries have so deeply enriched the Wadeye Community and our wider Church.
While we farewell the Brothers from Wadeye today, I am grateful that the Christian Brothers will continue their presence and ministry here in Darwin.
On behalf of the Diocese of Darwin, I thank the Christian Brothers profusely for your faithfulness to your calling in Wadeye. You will always remain in our prayers, our memory, and our hearts.
