‘Listen, Don’t Judge’: Bishop Gauci’s Appeal to Combat Homelessness with Care

In a poignant moment during an interview by a student from Mackillop Catholic College, Bishop Charles Gauci was asked a critical question by Hannah Torsney, a student concerned about homelessness in the Northern Territory. “What are some ways we can show compassion and support for those experiencing homelessness?” Hannah asked, encapsulating the growing concern about one of the Territory’s most pressing social issues.

Bishop Gauci’s response was direct and empathetic, urging the community to approach the issue without judgment. “The first requirement is to be nonjudgmental. Many people come up with presuppositions about why people are homeless, but there are many reasons,” he emphasised. He stressed that homelessness does not have a singular cause, as circumstances vary from domestic violence to financial hardships, affecting people of all ages and backgrounds.

His message was clear: listening and understanding are paramount. “It’s important to listen, find out, and not jump to conclusions,” Bishop Gauci said. He highlighted the need for compassion, explaining that true compassion involves feeling with others, rather than observing from a distance. He called for a more empathetic approach, where the community seeks to understand the root causes of homelessness and how they can assist, rather than offering fleeting sympathy.

Bishop Gauci also advocated for a collaborative approach, encouraging different agencies to work together in addressing the needs of homeless individuals. He noted that often, people require more than one form of assistance, ranging from counseling to housing services. “Sometimes it’s different agencies working together. So, a person may come for counseling and then be referred to an organisation that provides housing,” he explained.

The exchange between Hannah Torsney and Bishop Gauci serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts needed to tackle homelessness in the Territory, a complex issue that requires understanding, compassion, and coordinated support from the entire community. As homelessness rates continue to rise, Bishop Gauci’s call for empathy and action resonates more than ever, challenging both young and old to step forward and be part of the solution.
