On 23 June 2025, the Wadeye community gathered in deep gratitude and joy to mark a truly remarkable milestone — 90 years since the first Mass was celebrated at ‘Werntekngnanyi’ (Old Mission) on 23 June 1935 by Father Richard Docherty MSC.

What began as a humble gathering on the beach has grown into a rich, enduring story of faith, culture, and community. A historic photograph taken by Dr Bill Stanner captured that very first Mass — a small group of Aboriginal people, MSC Brothers, and lay missionaries coming together to begin what would become a lasting journey of shared life and faith.

This year, the anniversary Mass was celebrated in the beautiful Old Mission, Wadeye. The surroundings were nothing short of breathtaking: birds singing, the wind whispering through the trees, and waves crashing nearby — all reminding us of God’s creation and presence among us.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Alanga Gemma Nganbe, Marie Tchemjiri, and their families for generously welcoming us to celebrate this special occasion on their land.

Special gratitude goes to Bishop Charles Gauci, Bishop Eugene Hurley, Fr Leo Wearden MSC, Fr Joerg Nies SJ, Fr Brian McCoy SJ, and Fr John Kelliher MSC for leading us in a deeply moving Mass. We were also blessed by the presence of Brother Gerry CFS, Sr Philippa, Sr Mary (Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart), Sr Archana, Sr Francisca, and Sr Armanda, who brought their warmth and unwavering support.

We especially remembered those who have gone before us — their spirit was truly felt among us, reminding us of the strong foundations laid over these nine decades.

It was also a meaningful moment to farewell Fr Joerg, who has spent the past four weeks with the community. We thank him for his presence and wish him all the best in the future, hoping he returns again.

A special thanks as well to the staff from Catholic Education Northern Territory and to all who joined in making this day memorable.

As Bishop Charles Gauci shared:

“We give thanks for the many who have gone before us, and we pray that God will continue to bless this community as it continues its journey of faith, hope, and love. May we always honour the sacred trust handed down to us — walking together as brothers and sisters, one family in Christ.”

May this anniversary inspire us to keep building a future rooted in faith, strengthened by community, and enriched by culture.
