Pope Francis in Papua New Guinea: A Historic Apostolic Journey
Pope Francis has spent three nights in Papua New Guinea as part of his four-country Apostolic Journey to Asia and Oceania. The people of Papua New Guinea welcomed him with love, song, and traditional dance. Many travelled for days on foot to witness and take part in this momentous visit.
During his time in Papua New Guinea, Pope Francis met with the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart (MSC), commending their dedication and encouraging them to continue their courageous work. The MSCs began their mission in the region in 1882, focusing on education, healthcare, and pastoral work, particularly in remote areas.
Catholics make up roughly 25% of the country’s population, with many living in remote jungles and coastal villages.
