Project Compassion 2025: A Journey of Hope and Generosity Across the Northern Territory

As we mark the close of this year’s Lenten season, we pause in deep gratitude for the generosity, faith, and unity demonstrated by our Catholic community across the Northern Territory. It has been a truly inspiring Project Compassion 2025 campaign, launched by Bishop Charles Gauci, whose words of encouragement invited us all—parishes, schools, and families—to unite against poverty in this Jubilee Year of Hope.

From the very beginning of Lent, communities throughout the Diocese embraced the call to walk in solidarity with our brothers and sisters most in need. This year, Project Compassion spotlighted stories of resilience and transformation from Toefuata’iga in Samoa, Lam in Vietnam, and Irene in the Democratic Republic of Congo. These powerful testimonies were not just case studies—they were invitations to reflect, respond, and renew our commitment to living the Gospel.

Students across Catholic schools in the Northern Territory engaged deeply with the message of hope. In classrooms, teachers and students explored the meaning of Lent as a time for prayer, reflection, and action. Many took up the Big Water Walk challenge to stand in solidarity with communities facing water scarcity, raising funds for clean and safe water projects. Through these acts, students discovered that Jesus is our anchor of hope and that loving our neighbour means placing our faith into tangible action.

Parishes, too, responded with tremendous spirit. Faithful parishioners organised cake stalls, raffles, and other community initiatives. Beyond fundraising, these gatherings strengthened bonds of fellowship and renewed our shared mission to bring about a more just and compassionate world.

The involvement and collaboration across all corners of our Diocese reflect the very heart of Caritas Australia’s mission. Together, through prayer, advocacy, and acts of service, we have filled our Project Compassion boxes not just with coins, but with love and hope for those in need—so that all may “have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10).

On behalf of Caritas Australia and those whose lives will be transformed by your support, I extend my heartfelt thanks. Thank you to Bishop Charles for his ongoing leadership and support. Thank you to our parish communities, Catholic schools, students, teachers, clergy, and families for embodying what it means to be Pilgrims of Hope.

May God bless each of you for your generosity and witness this Lent.
