This weekend marks 27 years since the 1999 referendum in which the people of Timor-Leste voted for independence.
The period that followed brought terrible violence, suffering and loss of life. We remember all those who lost their lives, those who suffered, and the many families and communities who continue to carry the wounds of that time.
Timor-Leste has travelled a remarkable journey since then, and the work of healing, reconciliation and building a peaceful future continues.
Our Diocese has a special relationship with Timor-Leste, strengthened over many years through faith, friendship and the presence of the Timorese community among us. We share in their remembrance and join them in prayer.
We pray for all who suffered, for those who continue to grieve, and for the people of Timor-Leste as they continue their journey of healing and reconciliation.
May God bless Timor-Leste and its people, and may peace continue to grow from the sacrifices of the past.
