Rights of the Terminally Ill Bill 2026: The Church’s Position, Prayer and Pastoral Guidance
My dear sisters and brothers,
As your Bishop, I wish to speak with you about the important and sensitive matter of Voluntary Assisted Dying ( Rights of the Terminally Ill Bill 2026), currently being considered in the Northern Territory Parliament.
Catholic teaching is clear in affirming the dignity and sacredness of every human life, including at the end of life. While we do not support the deliberate taking of human life, we strongly support compassionate care that relieves suffering and allows people to die peacefully and with dignity. Good palliative care should be accessible to all who need it.
Our teaching does not require the use of extraordinary measures simply to prolong life when a person is approaching death. There comes a time when we can allow nature to take its course, while continuing to surround the person with appropriate medical care, comfort, love and support.
I have written to Members of the Northern Territory Parliament, recognising the significant responsibility they carry as they consider this matter. I have also expressed my concern that the conscience of healthcare professionals must be respected and protected.
I encourage you, if you wish, to respectfully communicate your views to your local Member of Parliament. Whatever differences of opinion may exist in our community, our conversations must always be conducted with respect, care and love for all.
Above all, let us remember those who are dying and the families and friends who accompany them. After 49 years of ordained ministry, I have accompanied many people through the dying process. Despite the pain and challenges, I have also witnessed how sacred and profound this time can be.
As Christians, the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus guide us as we reflect on life, suffering, death and our hope of eternal life.
Let us pray for our Members of Parliament, our healthcare professionals, those approaching the end of life, and their families. May we approach this important matter with dignity, wisdom, compassion and integrity.
God bless you all.
+Charles
