On 13 June 2025, the Tiwi community of Bathurst Island gathered for a truly historic and faith-filled celebration — commemorating 114 years since the first Catholic Mass on Tiwi soil and officially opening the Jubilee Year 2025 under the inspiring theme “Pilgrims of Hope.”
The day began in front of the iconic St Therese’s Church, a landmark built in 1941 by Tiwi hands and hearts. For more than 83 years, this church has stood as a sacred place of prayer, culture, and connection — a living witness to the Gospel taking root in Tiwi land through Fr. Francis Xavier Gsell MSC in 1911.
Community leader Richard Tangutalum warmly welcomed all, offering an Acknowledgement of Country to honour the Tiwi ancestors and custodians. Parish council chair Stacey Parker beautifully expressed the spirit of the day: “We come not only to remember the past, but to walk forward together as Pilgrims of Hope — celebrating 114 years of faith, mission, and community.”
A highlight of the celebration was the presence of Bishop Charles Gauci, Bishop of Darwin, who blessed and opened the historic church doors — symbolically inviting all to step into the Jubilee Year with renewed faith and unity.
A deeply moving Eucharistic Procession followed, weaving through the streets of Wurrumiyanga as a public act of worship and witness. The first station at Calvary Aged Care honoured elders and carers, celebrating their vital role as wisdom-keepers and pillars of the community.
At the second station in the Creation Garden of Xavier Catholic College, prayers were offered for young people — the future leaders of the Tiwi community. Finally, pausing at the Tiwi community shop, prayers were shared for families, workers, and all those in need, creating a tangible sense of Christ walking with His people.
The procession concluded at the new church with a solemn blessing before a Holy Mass filled with gratitude and reverence. Bishop Charles’ homily powerfully reminded everyone that God has always walked with the Tiwi people — long before missionaries arrived — in the land, stories, and Spirit. He called the community to enter the Jubilee Year with hope, healing, and renewed unity.
The celebration closed with a heartfelt Tiwi hymn dedicated to Bishop Gsell (Patakijiyali), honouring his legacy and the enduring faith of the Tiwi people.
This sacred day was much more than a commemoration — it was a powerful step forward into the future as Pilgrims of Hope. It was a day of faith, culture, and community coming together, lighting the way for future generations.
As the Tiwi community continues this journey, may they shine brightly with the light of Christ, strong in faith, rich in culture, and united in love.
