Born in 1787 in Cork, Ireland, Mary dedicated her life to serving the poor and marginalised. In 1815, her deep love of God and the poor led her to found the Religious Sisters of Charity. Their first ministry in Australia began in 1838 at the Female Factory in Parramatta, marking the arrival of the first religious women in Australia.
Mary’s vision and influence continue to guide the Congregation to this day. As we honour her, let us remember her words: “The Charity of Christ Impels Us” (2 Corinthians 5:14).
We are grateful for the Sisters of Charity for their service to God and God’s people in our Diocese. We especially acknowledge Sister Leone Wittmack, General Manager of Mission and Culture at Catholic Care NT, for her dedicated service to God and His people. We pray God’s blessing on her and the entire order as we celebrate the feast of their patroness, Mother Mary Augustine Aikenhead.
May her spirit of loving service inspire us all to reach out with compassion and kindness.
