Why Did Jesus Wait Until 30 to Get Baptized? Bishop Charles’s Answer to Augustine John’s Question
In a recent interaction, Augustine John, a curious child from India, asked a profound question that has intrigued many: “Why did Jesus get baptized only at the age of 30, while we are baptized when we are small?” This heartfelt query was directed to Bishop Charles Gauci, who provided a thoughtful and enlightening response.
Bishop Gauci began by explaining, “Augustine, Jesus, being truly God and truly human, didn’t need to be baptized. His baptism was there to give us an example.” He highlighted that Jesus spent 30 years preparing for his mission and ministry, and his baptism marked the beginning of this important journey.
“Jesus’ baptism was a public declaration,” Bishop Gauci continued, “It was a sign to other people that he was truly from God. When Jesus was baptized, God the Father said, ‘This is my son in whom I am pleased.’” This divine affirmation distinguished Jesus from others, emphasizing his unique role and divine origin.
Bishop Gauci also addressed the difference between Jesus’ baptism and our own. “While Jesus’ baptism was a unique event, our baptisms serve to make us members of God’s family, the Church,” he said. “Regardless of age, baptism is a wonderful way to belong to this loving and supportive community.” The Bishop reassured Augustine and all listeners, “We can get baptized at any age because baptism welcomes us into the church family. It’s a beautiful thing to be part of God’s family.” His words underscored the significance of baptism as a rite of initiation and belonging.
